"Honey, a fish is at the door"
Ding dong fish.
In the Netherlands, there is a fish doorbell. And you can help open the door!
In the heart of the city lies the beautiful Weerdsluis, a manually operated lock. When the lock gates are closed, fish are forced to wait, wasting valuable time and energy – making them easy prey for birds and predatory fish. To help the fish, an underwater camera is installed at the lock. If fish appear on screen, you can press the doorbell! This alerts the lock keeper, who will open the lock when many fish are waiting.
It seems like if too many people are watching the livestream, they disable the doorbell, but if you watch during a less popular time, you can ring the doorbell if you see a fish waiting. I was watching the livestream last night and rang the doorbell for a fish and when you do, the site asks you help identify what you saw! But the little guy I saw swam away so fast I couldn’t see what type of fish it was.
Anyway, it was very exciting when I saw the fish. Ironically when people ring my doorbell, half the time I pretend I’m not home. Ha.
