11 tech leaders' favorite obscure Reddit boards

If you're not reading r/onlyflans, what are you doing?

Hi BoTs,

To me, what makes Reddit special is the anonymity. Without the ability to compare myself to others, it is comparison-free in a way that other social media platforms are not. Plus I can choose the subreddits I want to read, avoiding the algorithmic whims that seems determined to push sad or irrelevant content to my eyes.

Reddit is the info I want from social without the shame. Besides the most popular boards, I also love to read smaller subreddits ranging from r/namenerds to r/parentinginbulk to r/30pluskincare.

But I could always use a few more boards to visit.

So I asked tech leaders: what is an obscure Reddit board that you read frequently?

Answers below….

  1. “I’m a fan of r/ObscureMedia, a treasure trove of forgotten TV shows, commercials, and rare video content from decades past. As a tech founder, it’s fascinating to see how storytelling and media have evolved, and it often sparks creative ideas for my work. I mostly just lurk, but the nostalgia and oddities are worth every scroll!” — Cache Merrill, Zibtek

  2. “One of my favorite obscure Reddit boards is r/DataHoarder, a community dedicated to preserving and archiving digital content, from rare software to historical datasets. I mostly lurk and read, fascinated by the creative ways members collect and organize information—it’s a treasure trove for anyone passionate about data and digital preservation.” - Chris Dukich, Display Now

  3. “One Reddit board that always catches my eye is r/Obscure Media (note from Molly: the same board as person #1! I checked it out for a longgggg time and I now get why everyone loves it) — the lovable little haven for cinephiles, gamers, and nerds of forgotten treasures from every part of the entertainment spectrum. Whether it's a forgotten 80s game, an indie flick that never made it into a cinema, or a cult TV show with a short life, this board leaps deep into the past to uncover secrets you didn't even know you had. I know, after many evenings of scrolling, it’s a place where the media you don’t want to ignore is talked about, which I can safely affirm. The best part? Not nostalgia for nostalgia’s sake – these debates invigorate forgotten narratives. It’s that ideal mix of exploration and kinship. I’m also a lurker (and poster) who can’t get enough of this board’s mix of sub-culture and fresh perspective. The old-school media is the last thing you’ll ever look at again.” - Paul Posea, Superside

  4. r/TechSupportGore is a subreddit that covers the worst of the worst for when tech support goes bad. I don't post and only lurk when I need to feel about about any recent tech support experience that's gone wrong. I also like r/TheoryOfReddit, a great subreddit for anyone interested in the cogs & gears that make Reddit tick. I like posting in it and seeing how others feel about Reddit's algorithms, to help me understand how other technologists are using the platform.” - Flynn Zaiger, Online Optimism

  5. “One obscure Reddit board I frequently visit is r/SideProject. It’s a goldmine for developers, tech enthusiasts, and founders sharing their passion projects, MVPs, and niche tools. I mostly browse to discover innovative ideas, see what problems others are solving, and gain inspiration for Poper’s feature development.” - Karan Bhakuni, Poper

  6. “One obscure Reddit board I enjoy is r/InternetIsBeautiful, which highlights unique and creative websites from across the internet. It’s a treasure trove for discovering quirky tools and inspiring niche projects that spark fresh ideas for content creation and strategy. I primarily browse and upvote interesting finds, using them as creative inspiration for digital marketing projects.” - Iryna Melnyk, JAS Studios

  7. “One obscure subreddit I love is r/TheOcho, which is all about showcasing and celebrating unusual and obscure sports and competitions. I enjoy reading the posts and discovering new, quirky sports that don’t usually get mainstream attention.” - James Hacking, Socially Powerful

  8. “One obscure Reddit board I love is r/Solarpunk, which covers imaginative, sustainable living concepts and aesthetics. I mostly read and get inspired by the creative, eco-friendly ideas.” - Jehann Biggs, In2Green

  9. “A favorite of mine is r/DataIsBeautiful, which showcases visually stunning data visualizations and infographics. I love browsing the insights and occasionally commenting on the impressive work.” - Roman Hipp, BetterContact

  10. “While not too obscure, I often browse r/coffee, a subreddit dedicated to all things coffee. I enjoy reading the posts and learning new brewing techniques from fellow coffee enthusiasts.” - Wes Wakefield, Pro Coffee Gear (Note from Molly: makes sense with the business they run)

  11. And finally, I’ll end on my personal favorite subreddit: r/onlyflans. -Molly Beck
